Unit: Force and Newton's Laws

Lesson Preview

Weight is the gravitational force Earth exerts on an object near its surface. It is a force measured in newtons (N).

The weight formula is:

W=mgW = m g

Here mm is the object's mass (in kg) and g9.8m/s2g \approx 9.8 \, \text{m/s}^2 is the acceleration due to gravity near Earth's surface.

Weight always acts downward toward the center of the Earth.
