Is AP Physics 1 harder than AP Physics C?

It depends on what you mean by "harder," and the answer surprises most students.

AP Physics 1 has a lower pass rate and lower average score than AP Physics C. That makes it statistically one of the hardest AP exams to score well on.

Why the numbers are misleading

But that doesn't mean the material is harder.

Different student populations. AP Physics C students have typically already taken AP Physics 1 (or regular physics) and are in or past calculus. They're self-selected for being stronger in math and science. AP Physics 1 draws a much wider range of students, many of whom are taking their first physics course ever.

Calculus actually makes mechanics easier. This sounds counterintuitive, but having calculus gives you more powerful tools. Concepts like instantaneous velocity, non-constant acceleration, and work done by a variable force are harder to reason about with only algebra. Calculus students can often "just compute" things that algebra-based students need to reason through conceptually.

AP Physics 1 tests conceptual depth. The exam asks you to explain why things happen, not just calculate answers. Many students find conceptual reasoning harder than plug-and-chug calculations, especially under time pressure. This is also why understanding concepts beats memorizing formulas.

Which should you take?

If you haven't taken calculus yet, AP Physics 1 is the right choice. It's algebra-based and doesn't require any calculus. If you've completed calculus and already have some physics background, AP Physics C might actually feel easier despite being a higher level course.
